For the second consecutive game, the Portuguese playmaker captained United at Old Trafford but on this occasion, he was unable to lead his team to victory as the Reds’ interval lead was cancelled out by Toffees winger Andros Townsend in the second half.
Fernandes’s 50th involvement in a Premier League goal had helped the Reds to go 1-0 up, as our no.18 controlled the ball excellently before finding Anthony Martial at the corner of Everton’s area. The Frenchman fired in his first strike of the season and at that stage, the Reds looked in good shape to go on and get the win.
Following the disappointing result against Rafael Benitez’s men, Bruno delivered an honest assessment in his post-match interview with club media.
“Of course, I think it’s difficult for us,” he told our reporter Stewart Gardner.
“We have to learn and the time is now. We cannot do this anymore. We did it so many times, we cannot slow the game down when we’re winning. We have to make it quicker, score once again, get one or two more goals and after that, maybe you can slow it down and make them run a bit more.
“We can be frustrated after the result, of course, but we have to come back after the international break and be ready for the next game.”
Although the result in the end was underwhelming, Bruno was pleased to see Martial back on the scoresheet.
“We are happy for him. Two seasons ago, he was the best scorer in the team. It’s difficult for him not to play as many games as he wants but he shows he’s ready when he comes on. He showed once again he can play an important part for us in the future.”
The Portugal international was understandably annoyed by how the visitors’ equaliser came about, from a corner he took for United at the other end of the pitch. The Toffees quickly countered and equalised through the aforementioned Townsend.
“Of course, it’s a really bad corner from me,” he said about Everton’s equaliser.
“We didn’t close down well enough outside the box, we didn’t clear the ball, we made many mistakes starting with my corner. We should do better, we should learn because it’s not the first time it’s happened. We have to be better next time. We need to change something, something’s not working to concede so many counter-attacks.
“That’s down to the players, not someone else. We have to make a foul, stop the game, I have to take a better corner. Many, many things have to be done better.”
“Not good enough, of course,” he said about the points tally so far..
“We should have more points, we could have more points. It’s what we have. We have to look forward now to what we can do from now until the end of the season. We still have a lot of games to do it, we haven’t lost anything and we have to carry on fighting for everything.”
